Empirical Comparison of Statistical Pavement Performance Models
نویسندگان
چکیده
We conduct an empirical comparison of nine representative statistical pavement performance models, which have been estimated using serviceability data from the AASHO Road Test. The purpose of the study is to understand the effect of different statistical assumptions and estimation techniques on the models’ predictive capabilities. The study consists of using the models to predict the serviceability of a common subset of pavements from the test over a two-year forecast horizon. Comparison of the models is carried out using both aggregateand disaggregate-level measures. The main insight that stems from our study is that models that account for heterogeneity lead to improved predictive capabilities. This is particularly important because the data were obtained from a controlled experiment. The study further shows that disaggregate measures are more useful in testing performance models because they are better indicators of the ability to capture the variability in data. Throughout the paper, we also discuss other model characteristics and issues that can be useful in the future development and evaluation of performance models. Performance Evaluation of Dynamic Modulus Predictive Models for Asphalt Mixtures
Dynamic modulus characterizes the viscoelastic behavior of asphalt materials and is the most important input parameter for design and rehabilitation of flexible pavements using Mechanistic–Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). Laboratory determination of dynamic modulus is very expensive and time consuming. To overcome this challenge, several predictive models were developed to determine dyn...

The AASHTO Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) pavement performance models and the associated AASHTOWare® Pavement ME Design software are nationally calibrated using design inputs and distress data largely from the national Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP). Further calibration and validation studies are necessary for local highway agencies’ implementation by taking into acc...

This study aims to improve the accuracy of AASHTO Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) pavement performance predictions for Iowa pavement systems through local calibration of MEPDG prediction models. A total of 130 representative pavement sites across Iowa were selected. The selected pavement sites represent flexible, rigid, and composite pavement systems throughout Iowa. The req...
متن کاملEstimation of Global Solar Irradiance Using a Novel combination of Ant Colony Optimization and Empirical Models
In this paper, a novel approach for the estimation of global solar irradiance is proposed based on a combination of empirical correlation and ant colony optimization. Empirical correlation has been used to estimate monthly average of daily global solar irradiance on a horizontal surface. The Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm has been applied as a swarm-intelligence technique to tune the c...

Highways and in particular their pavements are the fundamental components of the road network. They require continuous maintenance since they deteriorate due to changing traffic and environmental conditions. Monitoring methods and efficient pavement management systems are needed for optimizing maintenance operations. Pavement performance prediction models are useful tools for determining the op...
